Here are some rambling thoughts and recommendations for the Natural Yard in the heat of summer. Mow your lawn at the highest recommended setting for your type of grass. Longer blades result in a more robust root system which makes for a healthier lawn. Leave the grass clippings on the lawn. They provide a valuable, no cost source of fertilizer. Fight weeds and conserve water in your planting beds with a thick layer of mulch. Put down a sheet of cardboard (or several sheets of newspaper) and top off with at least 3 inches of your favorite mulch. Provide for butterflies and hummingbirds by planting a diversity of food and nectar plants throughout the garden. Don´t forget to drink lots of water and wear a big hat – it’s hot out there!
