Spring is here and it is time to think about yard clean–up. Keep your safety in mind while you are doing it. Make sure that shrubs are trimmed back from entryways and exterior lights are in good working order. Plant a prickly plant under windows to discourage intruders. I recently replaced my front porch fixture with a motion sensing one and I realize that I should have done it years ago.
We have had a couple of incidents in the neighborhood and Officer Maria wants us to make sure that we secure our valuables and lock all our doors and windows. With the nice weather, it is great to leave the windows open but be sure to secure them when you leave or go to bed for the night. If anyone has any other suggestions, email me with your ideas.

The Media Committee welcomes your help and feedback for our Web site at any time. If you would like to send us your thoughts, please call or email Wade Bradt at 850–745–0243 or wade.bradt@fhhhna.com.
We are still looking for someone who would like to help us in the Advertising and/or Marketing areas. The board would like for the website to generate enough in advertising revenue to pay for its updates (without using monies from the general fund), but we need someone with experience in that area to help us generate those advertisers. CAN YOU HELP?! If so, please let Wade know and thanks for your help!
Also, we have begun featuring new columns. David Copps was gracious enough to provide us with some terrific advice in his column in this issue. If you are interested in submitting a column for the newsletter and/or website, please let us know. Thanks!
Believe it or not, it is time to select the next Yard of the Quarter winners! We are calling for nominations now through April 25th. Please contact us if you know of a neighbor’s yard that should be part of the competition. If you nominated a yard last quarter and it did not get chosen, please re-nominate it if you feel it should be in the running. You may email your nominations to Sue Carpenter at scarpenter.2@juno.com or call her at 850–212–3695.
Congratulations to last Quarter’s winners! The neighbors who won were: Kentwood Estates; Susan Shively, 2341 Skyland Drive- Forest Heights; George Swain, 1906 Fairlane- Holly Hills; Lemroy and Eunice Saunders, 1919 Myrick. Each of our winners has been given a yard sign announcing their award. The signs will be moved to the new winners’ yards after the meeting on April 29th. If you haven’t done so already, take a couple of minutes to drive by or walk by these homes. They are truly winners!
If we are lacking rain right now remember to water lawns only when grass blades turn a bluish-gray color and fold in half. Water in the early morning, and place several rain gauges (or cans with straight sides) throughout the sprinkler pattern to determine when you’ve applied an average of one-half inch of water throughout the zone. This is a good time to plant plugs to fill in bare spots. But if you do, water frequently to get roots established. If you have questions, call the Leon County Extension Office at 850–606–5202 and ask to speak to a Master Gardener. They are a great resource.
We need another committee member! If you are interested in becoming part of this committee, please contact Gineen Krafft at pkrafft@plp.info or call her at 850–386–6479.
